Designer Axel has combined his passion for Porsche and board sports to great effect
Here at Style for Miles we like to celebrate those with shared passions. So when we came across a French gentleman who’d set up a Porsche inspired design brand - AxelWave Lifestyle - language was no barrier to appreciation.
A Porsche fanatic who grew holidaying near the celebrated Le Mans racetrack, it was only natural that young Alexandre soaked up the German manufacturer’s rich 24 hours competition success.
“My favourite Porsche period is the 70’s, I was born too late! The 60’s are also fascinating, it’s when Porsche’s distinct evolution really took off – that desire to perform at the highest level in racing and expand the product range.”
These formative years obsessing over Porsche were also spent indulging in his other obsession, what Alex calls ‘sliding sports’.
“In my youth, these other passions channeled my creativity - skateboarding, roller-skating, skimboarding, bodyboarding and surfboarding were constantly in my life. Through these lifestyle pursuits I was able to further express myself.”
Further along the line, Alex began applying the design and engineering skills he’d learnt through his studies to the car world, whether this was engine development, engine architecture, design of the interior trim of plastic cars, designer and 3D modeler. This culminated in working for a large French automotive manufacturer.
“However, once I’m home I return to my own private universe, expressing myself via drawing, modelling and working on my 911.”
The result of all these influences is the aptly named AxelWave Lifestyle brand. “Axel for my nickname (and it’s automotive connotations) and Wave for the sensation associated with my active pursuits! The brand’s philosophy is about the coexistence of one’s lifestyle passions, how these drive and inspire you.”
Central to this is Axel’s website, which celebrates Axel’s passion for Porsche, and in particular his ownership of a 924, a 914 and his most treasured possession, the 911 SC, purchased back in 2003.
“When I was younger I spent several years pushing my father to take the 911 plunge. Then one day, as I was lying on a beach, he called me up: ‘I’m coming home with a car!’”.
This turned out to be an ‘88 3.2 Carrera G50 in midnight blue, and Axel knew the race was now on to join the club - the SC was purchased just six months later. After the 911, the 914 arrived in 2013, in part inspired by its quirky design, then last year the 924 was added.
Axel says he reaction to the website and the design work has been extremely positive. “My friends and family love what I do. I share it with them, and they share it with others!”
There has also been positive feedback from the wider Porsche community. “I’ve had some nice remarks. Followers really appreciate the site, my Insta page and my illustrations."
"Though to be honest, I’m a reserved person by nature, so first and foremost I created this universe for myself. To really grow it commercially you have to put yourself out there, into the wider world. In the long-term I aim to do that, but my main goal has always been to express myself.”
Given such common ground and inspired passions, Style for Miles feel’s AxelWave Lifestyle deserved a little promotion.
