Professional photographer and Porsche fanatic Alex Pink discusses his twin passions

Transfixed as a child by a succession of Porsche’s imported by his neighbour, professional photographer Alex Pink has now switched his focus from the bedroom window to behind the lens, capturing his favourite subject matter to great effect.

SFM: Why does Porsche appeal so much as a subject matter?

AP: I’ve been a fan of Porsche for as long as I can remember, all the way back to my Match Box 930 Turbo! The 911 is such an awe-inspiring design, seemingly simple and elegant. There's something magical about having the engine in the rear, it offers a driving experience like no other.

SFM: What’s your process for setting up a shoot?

AP: It really does depend on the brief. With many shoots, I have total creative freedom, where others the client has a clear idea or brief. It really depends on the shoot. Sometimes it’s fun to put a car in an unexpected place and create something unexpected out of it.

Style's 'Drive Five'

Most memorable road trip?
It was the Transfagarasan highway, up until last year, when we undertook a family road trip to Lake Como in my 996 Targa. There's something special about traveling under your own steam. When you leave the house your car doesn’t know whether you are going to the supermarket or across Europe. I've always liked that idea!

The highlight of the journey was driving over Gotthard Pass in Switzerland. Not only was it an exhilarating drive but it's a road which my grandparents used to take on their holidays to Italy.

Favourite driving route?
There are many sections of many roads which I enjoy on a regular basis - but as a whole, I’ve always enjoyed the drive to Goodwood. Zig-zagging the south downs and taking in the surrounding English countryside, to the sound of a flat-6. Hard to beat!

Ultimate Road Trip
Driving from London to Sicily, taking in Italy on-route. In my head, it's a mixture of the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio.

Porsche of choice?
904 Carrera GTS (4-Cylinder)

Ultimate driving partner?
Stirling Moss. He won the Mille Miglia and came across as an absolute gentlemen.

SFM: Where do you get your inspiration from?

AP: I’m inspired by many things - good design, art, other photographers, and film. Inspiration is often generated by the act of getting on with the task at hand.

Tryng to make a good picture is like chasing a high, you are always chasing to ensure it builds on your previous work, I'm always inspired to draw out new ideas and perspectives.

SFM: What Porsche model would you love to shoot and what location?

AP: The Porsche 904 GTS in Sicily, inspired by the success it achieved in the Targa Florio. I’d be happy with that!

SFM: What's the favourite Porsche you've shot and why?

AP: It's probably a Carrera 3.2 Clubsport. The CS is a lightweight, analogue 911 that offers a raw driving experience and yet somehow manages to slip under the radar. I’ve always liked the look of the G-Series models and I think the Clubsport is the best of the bunch, maintaining that classic 911 silhouette that creates so many possibilities.
